This Hallmark executive made it big at a young age. Heres howThis Hallmark executive made it big at a young age. Heres howLindsey Roy says she knew she had made it when she first rode on Hallmarks corporate jet. Though that experience is perhaps notlage the most relatable, other moments from a recent profile in Bustle reveal a very human side to one of the most prominent marketing executives in the country. Now chief marketing officer of Hallmark Greetings, Roy was once a Rascal Flatts-loving, cowboy boot-wearing 28-year-old. And she has some advice for her younger self.I would say to worry less about the small stuff, Roy told Bustle. Trust your gut and the hard work youve put in and know that will ultimately matter more than the way you word something in an email.A career professional at Hallmark, Roy joined the company when she was only 22 years old. She made history at the card manufacturer when she became one of its youngest vice presidents at 32, and in the Bustle interview, she paints herself as a hard worker driven to succeed.I think its just a series of good twists and turns where you try to do a good job, you get lined up with great leaders and managers, the work changes, and then your story is cumulative versus one big moment, said Roy.Roy is known for how shehandled adversity after a boating accident in 2013 left her severely injured and required a leg amputation. But the article looks at Roys resilience outside of the tragedy that she overcame to land in the C-suite.Though most of the QA focuses on Roys life in Kansas City as a young professional, she also alludes to the divide so many women experience early on in their careers. When asked what she and her friends spoke most about at 28 years old, her answer was not promotions, or raises, or aspirations. Instead, it was relationships. At this stage in life, some of my friends were single, some were dating seriously, some were married, Roy said. This was a dynamic time for relationships.Roy even wrestl ed with her own dreams of family and career. She said she does not remember feeling much work-related anxiety, but she did have angst around where her life would end up.I think at that age people have just a lot of changing life dynamics, and youre just trying to figure yourself out, Roy said. I hoped for continued career growth and challenges. I hoped for having the opportunity to create an amazing family of my own. I hoped for keeping my friends close no matter where life took us.Most people would say Roy has done right by her 28-year-old self, and she seems to agree.I think shed be excited with where we are, Roy said. Not everything would be as predicted, but its even better, and thats kind of the fun serendipity of life.

We trust people with accents less ... unless they sound confident
We trust people with accents less ... unless they sound confidentWe trust people with accents less ... unless they sound confidentWhen you open your mouth and begin to speak, what you say may matter less than how you say it if you want to get people to believe you. A new study in the journalNeuroImagefound that we judge people on the accents in their speaking voice and are more likely to trust accents that are foreign to us if we feel an affinity towards them.If you have a foreign accent, project confidenceResearchers from McGill University found that different parts of our brain get activated when we hear people speak, and these brain regions help us determine what value we place on what people tell us. To test this, they recruited participants who spoke Canadian-English as their mother tongue to listen to people who sounded similar, like other Canadian-English speakers, and different, such asAustralian-English and English spoken by Francophone-Canadians. They heard these speakers s ay statements like She has access to the building in confident, doubtful or neutral voices. The participants believed speakers who sounded like them, trusting them more with less brainpower needed to determine this. The superior parietal regions of the participants brains, the parts responsible for making judgments based on past experiences, got activated when they heard people similar to them. But when the participants heard accents that were foreign to them, their brains had to get more involved to make calls of judgment.In-group voices were generally judged to be more believable than speakers with out-group (regional or foreign) accents, the paper stated. But if you have an accent in the workplace, you are bedrngnis doomed from the start. You can win trust by simply speaking like you know what you are talking about. Speakers with a regional or foreign accent who spoke with confidence were equally believable as the speakers who sounded like the participants. If I want to be believed , it may be in my interest to adopt a very confident tone of voice in a whole range of situations, Xiaoming Jiang, one of the authors of the study and a person who speaks English as a second language, said. This is a finding that potentially has repercussions for people who speak with an accent when it comes to everything ranging from employment to education and the judicial process.Whether or not it is fair, judgments about your worth at work and outside of it come down to trust. By learning how to trust your own voice, you can help others learn to trust it as well.

How To Make a Difference No Matter Where You Work
How To Make a Difference No Matter Where You WorkHow To Make a Difference No Matter Where You Work You might call me a risk-taker, and you wouldnt be wrong. But risk-taking has allowed me to explore opportunities, challenge my world understanding and pursue my dreams in ways I never would have been able to by playing it safe. I grew up in Brooklyn, NY. At the age of 16, I traveled to Burma to understand womens empowerment on a global scale. At 18, I then traveled to Turkey and Tunisia. At 19, I co-founded a non-profit organization, Women Everywhere Believe , to train the next generation of women leaders by centering the voices of women and girls of color. And in under a year, we expanded to thirteen universities. Because of my past experiences, at the age of 20, I welches selected to work in the Obama White House as an fr sich selbst working on criminal justice reform and economic opportunity. Based on my experiences, many people assumed I would stay in the public sec tor. After hearing mixed reviews about corporate America, I didnt know if it would ever be the right fit. But I figured Id never know unless I tried. So last summer, I took my public-sector experience - in addition to the Obama White House, Ive worked in the New York State Unified Court System and New York City Council - and went to work as a human resources and communications intern at Unilever , a $62.9 billion global company. As a joint intern, I had the opportunity to contribute to a number of projects that focused on community impact, including Growing Roots, Unilevers commitment to building healthier communities through access and education. I enjoyed it because I truly felt that my work was making a difference and was valued. At the same time, it was a chance to think outside the box about how to address some major issues through a corporate lens.Despite my initial hesitancy, by the end of my internship the risk proved to be well worth it. I learned that you can do valuable work on the issues youre passionate about at a big corporation. If you too are willing to step outside your comfort zone and try it, I suggest keeping these things in mind. When looking into companies, the first thing most of us do is Google. We search for reviews of the culture , average salary, and landseek out the wisdom of others experiences. While youre at it, go to the websites of organizations affiliated with causes you care about and check out who their corporate sponsors are. Youll start to see a pattern in who is contributing to fund these important initiatives. I believe that where a company spends its dollars is the best indicator of its values, and when you see those strong values, youll have a lead on companies at which to search for roles. The true measure of impact is not what spaces we occupy, but rather what we do in those spaces. We live in a society where, whether we choose to see it or not, practices in both the public and private sector affect us on an individ ual level. Take this to heart, and put a pin in worrying that youre selling out. Instead, consider where an organizations goals align with your own and where you can exchange value with it.So what if it doesnt quite work out? We often put unrealistic expectations on ourselves to have everything figured out right this second - or at least by a certain age. I attribute this to our fear of failure and judgment from friends and family. But lets be real Everyone has his or her own story to tell. You can always take the skills you learn in the private sector and apply them to your next role in the public sector, or vice versa.Theres no doubt about it Big corporations can be bureaucratic. But with that often comes substantial room for neuheit . Use this to your advantage. Know your information (data, research studies, competitors) cold, understand all the stakeholders stances and see where you can build consensus. At Unilever, I learned the importance of a strong and positive presentat ion. It was important that I remember I was hired for my skills, insight and because I could add value. With this knowledge, I was able to go to my boss confident that my ideas were good. That way, I could move right into addressing the most relevant questions. Is this feasible? If not, why? What are the risks? How does it affect our bottom line? If I could give the right answers, more often than not, I got the go-ahead to innovate.Perhaps Im lucky, but at Unilever, I always felt the company was honest about its willingness and ability to allocate resources to various initiatives. Because they were transparent, I could be transparent too. To be transparent allows honest conversations that allow you to challenge yourself and your team. There are enough yes-people in the world. You want to be the person who, when invited to the table, helps create the best end result by challenging others to rise to the occasion. This doesnt have to be hostile. It can come through affirming, questioni ng and highlighting the ways that the whole team can take its work to the next level. This article originally appeared on The Well , Jopwells digital magazine. New research identifies the precise location of the glass ceiling
New research identifies the precise location of the glass ceilingNew research identifies the precise location of the glass ceilingADP Research Institute, the research arm of the giant payroll firm, released a major report last week called State of the Workforce Pay, Promotions, and Retentions. It relied on the anonymized HR and payroll records of about 13 million employees from 30,000 firms across eight sectors in the United States, including construction, education and health, finance and insurance, leisure and hospitality, and manufacturing.By analyzing metrics such as employee turnover, wages, vorrcken rates, and organizational hierarchy, the report is meant to help employers understand if they are in the right distribution policy according to those benchmarks. (The report is broken up into mini-reports by industry.)Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreThe reason we published this research is in this tight labor market, the employers need insight in how U.S. firms are designed in terms of the hierarchy level, in terms of the span of control, so they have the benchmarks to really get the insight their business needs and compare it with other competitors, said Dr. Ahu Yildirmaz of ADP Research Institute, one of the authors of the report. In general, the report found that, on average, companies promote 8.9% of their employees annually. The average time for an employee to receive their first promotion to manager is 6.9 years. Although theres a promotion gap men are more likely to get a promotion compared to women 9.3% to 8.4%, respectively. The average number of years to first promotion for women is 6.6% and 7.3% for men.Millennials are the group most likely over any other any group to get a promotion, at 10.5% Yildirmaz explained that partially as a positive correlation between youth and promotability. The precise location of the glass ceilingThe most striking p iece of information that jumped out of the data was the decline of women between the 3rd and 4th levels of management, said Yildirmaz. It was, in a way, the precise location of the glass ceiling it binnenseems that women keep banging their heads against the 4th level of management typically the senior director level.More than a pay gap, this is also a hierarchical gap.We know that for every dollar a man earns, a woman takes home 80 cents, but we wanted to go deeper, Yildirmaz said. When you look at the hierarchy levels, its not surprising that there are less women at high-paid jobs, so when you look at hierarchy level when you look at the first level, second level, third level, you dont see a gap. But we found that when you move from the third level to the fourth level these are the senior directors thats where the inflection point is.At the 3rd level of management, there are 35% women, and 65% men.At the 4th level, there are 23% women, and it only declines precipitously from th ere.The 4th level appears to define the glass ceiling, which is a steep decline in female representation, says Yildirmaz. If you climb up the ladder, the percentage of women decline. As you can see from the below chart, even as you climb the corporate ladder, the pay gap remains intact.

New College Grad and Entry-Level Resumes
New College Grad and Entry-Level ResumesNew College Grad and Entry-Level ResumesAs a leading provider of career services, including resume writing, cover letter writing and interviewing preparation help, ResumeSpice and our team of career consultants sees resumes from a wide range of professionals. For this post, were going to focus on the concerns of new gradsOur ResumeSpice career consultants compiled common questions they receive about entry-level resume writing to share with you on your journey to land your next opportunity. How do I make my resume look more extensive than it is?When you dont have a lot of professional experience, its tempting to try and bulk up the experience you do have with filler information. We often see this in the form of over-explaining each bullet point. But you dont have to do that. In fact, recruiters and hiring managers prefer not to read walls of text, so keep your list of bullets to the most important, impressive duties. And since most entry-level posi tions require two years or fewer years of experience (by definition), no recruiter expects you to have a robust professional history. If you feel the need to provide additional color that your resume format doesnt allow, a cover letter may be the best avenue for doing so.Only time and experience can fill out your resume. Focus on getting that first job and the rest will follow.Should I include an objective or a summary? The truth about objective statements is that, at best, theyre not read and at worst, they can eliminate you from the running for a job. If your objective does not match the role youre applying for EXACTLY, thats a reason for your recruiter to screen it out. Lastly, objective statements are redundant recruiters already know youre seeking an opportunity by virtue of the fact that you have appliedCan I include volunteer work on my resume?Absolutely. We typically encourage entry-level professionals to include volunteering, internships, and even coursework that can demon strate that you have the experience and/or skillsets to do the job.Getting that first job out of college can be a tricky road to navigate at times, but hopefully the above tips are helpful as you begin your journey. If you need input, advice, or a custom resume, cover letter, or LinkedIn profile, call ResumeSpice today we would love to help
